CORE members present at the October 3rd CORE general meeting voted unanimously to endorse Occupy Chicago — the local version of a nationwide movement that began in New York and spread across the country. Occupiers have taken over Chicago’s financial district.
The mission statement of the organization, according to their website is to
… fight corporate abuse of American democracy in solidarity with our brothers and sisters around the world.
The message is loose and still in formation, and demands are still being formulated. The main argument is that the richest 1% in the country have abused the bottom 99% through rampant risky investments, austerity measures, and the pay-to-play political system that runs the nation.
It’s a 24-hour vigil so supplies are always needed. The occupiers are camped out at Jackson and LaSalle. Check in and see what’s needed. According to the @OccupyChicago twitter page:
We are looking for a mobile power unit for the night! A Car Battery and a DC to AC Power Inverter Should Do It!
#occupychi
The October 10th Stand Up Chicago! march and rally (co-sponsored by CTU) ends at the occupation site. Let’s show them solidarity as teachers, paraprofessionals, ans clinicians are also in the 99%.

Ernestina (Tina) Padilla represents CORE in the November 4th election for Teacher Trustee to the Chicago Teachers Pension Fund. Click here to download her nominating petition.
A mathematics teacher at Lane Tech High School, Ms. Padilla is in her 23rd year as a teacher with the Chicago Public Schools. She serves the union as a District Supervisor and on the Pension and Insurance Committee. Tina is currently in the MBA program at Keller, where she is working toward her second master’s degree with a concentration in finance/education. She has experience as a mortgage broker and established an investment group with other professionals to share investment expertise and market insights.
A National Board Certified Teacher, Ms. Padilla earned her bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Northeastern Illinois University and her first master’s degree in mathematics from De Paul University. In the past, Tina has served as an Associate Union Delegate at Lane Tech High School, as well as on CTU’s Women’s Rights and Tech Prep Committees. She has lobbied alongside other CTU members in Springfield, meeting with Illinois General Assembly members to fight for teachers’ rights. She has volunteered on campaigns for union endorsed candidates, as well.
Tina will make sure the Pension Fund fights aggressively against pension reform and identify the true culprits of our district’s inability to make good on it’s basic promises. The threats are real and require trustees who can organize, communicate and fight back. A proud member of CORE, Tina is ready to do exactly that.
