CORE Candidate Karen Lewis
On Wednesday, April 7th, 2010, all five candidates for CTU president convened in a town hall meeting to debate before the House of Delegates. Unfortunately, the UPC leadership would not allow for any recording of this event.
It was Justice Louis Brandeis who said, “Sunlight is the Greatest Disinfectant.” Unfortunately the tens of thousands of CTU members not formally invited by the UPC leadership could not see quips from incumbent CTU President Stewart such as (to CORE Candidate Karen Lewis), “You are still in the classroom because you don’t know what you’re talking about,” insinuating veteran classroom teachers don’t have the experience to run an organization of other classroom teachers and paraprofessional staff.
Those members also missed Lewis’ response:
“where has experience gotten us – charter explosion, union infighting, and 6,000 union teachers jobs gone – that experience doesn’t work for me.”
-Karen Lewis
