Last January, history was made when over 500 parents, students, and activists turned out at Malcolm X College to protest Renaissance 2010 and Chicago’s turnaround school policy. Shortly after, CPS changed their mind on 6 schools that were slated for closing. Unfortunately, since 2004 over 70 CPS sch0ols have been closed and over 10 percent of all CPS students now attend charter schools. More closings are expected this year and your school could be on the chopping block.
If your school has ever been on probation, on a turnaround list, or simply doesn’t fit into CPS’s long term plans, you could next. The only chance we have to stand up to the continued privatization of the Chicago Public Schools and continued political games with the future of our children is a united front. Join a committed group of teachers, parents, community activists, and students to provide an alternative to the destruction of our school communities. Get involved now before you find your own school at risk.
CORE will be announcing their slate for the May union elections at this meeting. There will be refreshments provided as well as free child care. Come out and be counted.
